MINIMIZE YOUR POOL ENERGY USE

MINIMIZE YOUR POOL ENERGY USE

Swimming pools & spas can be large energy users, beaten only by hot water services and air conditioning when it

comes to consumption. Fortunately, there are some simple measures that you can employ to reduce energy

consumption and keep costs down.

TALK TO YOUR ENERGY PROVIDER

Some energy providers offer incentives to use electricity out of peak times. Moving to shoulder or

off-peak tariff periods isn't limited to pool equipment either, running clothes dryers and dishwashers,

outside peak times can provide cost savings as well. Enquire about ‘Smart Meters’ as some energy

providers offer free upgrades, allowing you to take advantage of cheaper energy rates.

You may decide to locate the pool equipment away from the house or use a sound proofing cover to

minimise the noise, if you choose to run the equipment overnight to capitalise on cheaper energy.

INVEST IN EFFICIENCY

The larger the pump, the more power it uses, so opt for the pump size that fits your requirements, but no

bigger. The E3 Energy Rating Labelling Program for pool pumps offers guidance on the most energy

efficient. Consider upgrading to a Multi-speed or Variable speed pump. They can offer a multitude of

functions, while providing large savings, up to $500 per year.

Running times should be matched with filtering and sanitisation requirements, with the system set for

optimal daily run times, multiple short cycles are better than one larger cycle.

POOL COVERS & HEAT LOSS

Around 90% of heat loss in a pool occurs at the surface. Not only can a blanket protect the pool from leaf

litter & other debris, they can substantially extend the swimming season. In the case of a heated pool, a

well-fitting blanket can deliver an energy saving of up to 50%.

Even without pool heating (gas, electric or solar), the addition of a pool blanket can result in a 6-8 degree

temperature increase in a pool that has a sunny aspect.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE

It is important to have a regular maintenance program. Removal of leaf litter & other debris, cleaning

filter and general maintenance will prevent poor circulation and associated problems. If the equipment

has to work harder than necessary, it will draw more power and cost more to run.

JCPOOLS MONTHLY

COVID-19 AND POOLS

This month we talk about the conditions and give a summary of the best way to own a swimming pool and live with COVID-19.

If swimming pools are being chlorinated in accordance with current recommendations & best practices, Is this sufficient to inactivate COVID-19 virus? And should users do anything differently?

CAN CHLORINE DEACTIVATE COVID-19

The World Health Organization states that a residual concentration of free chlorine of >0.5ppm in the pool after at least 30 minutes of contact time, at a pH of <8 is sufficient to kill Covid-19 viruses.

Which means that, not only can chlorine act as a disinfectant, but can also tackle the virus taken into the pool by a swimmer.

UV SANITISERS

UV disinfection amplifies the efficiency of chlorine based sanitizing methods, to give an extra level of protection.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

Maintaining the correct level of FREE CHLORINE and the correct pH is essential to provide disinfection.

To maximise safety:

  1. Maintain the pH between 7.2 & 7.6, ensure you are adding the required amount of Hydrochloric Acid.
  2. Ensure that the level of FREE CHLORINE is held above 0.5-1ppm at all times.
  3. To amplify the spectrum of disinfection, the use of UV is highly recommended.
  4. Continuous measurement of pH & Chlorine levels, using an analyser, is recommended, so that the users are fully informed about the water’s quality.
  5. Keep the alkalinity in check, as that will help to maintain the pH balanced.
  6. Consider using a chlorine dioxide precursor, as this will remove any biofilm build-up further reducing the chance of bacteria and virus build-up within the water.
  7. If you are treating an algal bloom, use an algaecide in conjunction with the chlorine. These products work synergistically in treating the algae and will allow the chlorine to do its job of killing off bacteria and viruses.

OTHER SUGGESTIONS

Adequate personal hygiene should be maintained, washing your hands with soap is the minimum, though it is recommended that the bathers shower before & after swimming. Keep the surrounding areas of the pool including showers, ladders & equipment disinfected using products specially indicated for this use.
